What Is Your Garden Room Going To Be Used For?

Now you might be wondering, what is a garden room?. If you don’t know what a garden room or house is, you might not know how exactly one will benefit you. In short, a garden room is a semi-permanent outdoor structure that can be used as an office, gym, playroom, storage room or even a workshop.

What you do with it, is really up to you. If you’re not really sure, don’t fret. Sit down and think about what you want out of a dream garden house. Tips that might help, try figuring out what you want to put in it and why.

A small garden room or log cabin doesn’t have to be the most extravagant. If you just want a compact garden office, an inconspicuous quiet corner with a small building might work best for you. For a game room, however, you might want something bigger and closer to where the action happens.

Have You Chosen The Right Size For Your Garden Room?

The next thing you need to think about is the size garden room you want. The size of your garden room will be limited by the amount of space you have in your backyard. If you have a very large garden, however, you’re free to pick and choose to your heart’s content.

If you haven’t answered the question above, you might want to do that before deciding on the size. What your garden house will be used for plays a big role in what size it needs to be. For instance, a garden room used as an office will be much smaller than one used as an entertainment room.

If you have a very small garden, you will need to find a way to make a small garden room work for you, however. A large one might take up too much space and turn your garden into a crowded mess. Nobody wants that. Garden rooms are best if you can still enjoy the peace and quiet nature has to offer.

Have You Chosen A Style For Your Garden Room?

Once you’ve decided on the use and size for your garden house, it’s time to look a the finer details. Garden rooms come in a variety of styles from modern to traditional. You also have the option of having large windows to enjoy the view or small ones for privacy.

Again the use of your garden room will play a big role. For instance, if you simply want to use it as a storage room, you might not want large glass windows to allow everyone to see what’s inside. On the other hand, if you want to use it as an office, entertainment area or guest suite you might opt to go for the more modern style with big windows.

If you have a very traditional garden, you might want your garden house to match your existing aesthetics. For more modern garden styles, you might want to go with the more modern garden house as well. Nothing is set in stone, however, so choose the one you like best. Just keep your garden in mind. Good looking on the website might not be so great in your garden.

What Direction Is Your Garden Room Going To Face?

Now we get to the smaller details. You will need to decide which way you want your garden house to face. If you like a bit of sun, you might want to place it in such a way that the largest windows face the sun most of the day.

If you prefer your garden room to stay cool, you might want to turn it in such a way that a windowless wall faces the sun most of the day. You can also minimize distractions by turning your garden house in such a way that it faces a wall or fence. For those with kids, you can always decide to place your garden room in a way that you can always see them playing. The direction depends on your personal needs. There’s no right or wrong.

Privacy is a big concern for many. For some privacy, you might want to place your garden house in such a way that it faces away from the neighbour's house. If you’re privileged enough to have a great view over your neighbourhood, facing your garden house in that direction might be a big plus.

Where Are The Windows And Doors Going To Be In Your Garden Room?

Choosing where the windows and doors will go, goes hand in hand with which direction you want your garden house to face. It will also depend on your design to an extent. Some garden houses don’t have doors and windows on the same side, but most do.

Again, if you like your privacy, make sure your doors and windows face away from any public areas and the neighbour's houses. If you don’t have the option to do this, maybe go for a garden house with smaller windows.

Next, you will need to consider the sun. If you like a bit of sunshine in your outdoor office, make sure your windows face the sun. Another consideration will be wind. If you like to have your windows open, make sure to face your garden house away from the main wind direction in your area. If you have a garden room with glass all around, take into account any major trees. Trees can shade you in summer if you plan ahead.

What Kind Of Lights Are You Going To Have In Your Garden Room?

For this section, you have a choice between natural light and artificial light. If you’re going for natural light, it’s best to place your garden room in such a way that it allows lots of sunlight to filter in. You can also plan for your garden room to be in the shade in the morning but receive sunlight in the evening or the other way around.

If you’re going for natural light, it’s best to choose a garden room with lots of large windows. If you prefer to use artificial lighting, you can install an overhead light or use lamps. You will need to factor in an electricity source when deciding on a location for your garden house as well.

For artificial light you might need an electrician to come out and install it. This will allow you to use your garden room at night, but you’ll pay a bit extra for the installation. They’ll most likely need to lay a cable from the main house to the garden house to achieve this.

Who Will Be Using Your Garden Room?

The last thing you will need to think about and consider is who will use your garden room. If you specifically want a play area for your kids, it’s better to use a room with fewer windows. Children have a tendency to get in trouble and lots of glass could be an issue.

If you just want a Compact Garden Office to do your work from home, then you can have as many windows as you like. It’s still a risk, however, if your kids will be playing ball games out in the yard quite often. For a gym, you might want more privacy.

You might have noticed by now that all these questions have something to add to each other. You can’t answer one without thinking about the next one. In the end, however, you will know exactly what you need and want for your dream garden room.

Happy shopping!
